Study Abroad  101 Semester Programs guides

Is one of NC State's semester study abroad programs right for you? Exchange, and direct enroll programs are the most popular options for students studying, abroad for a semester or academic year.

Both exchange and direct enroll, program options are more independent experiences.

On exchange programs, we send, NC State students to partner universities, and partner universities, send their students to study at NC State. On exchange programs you pay your, regular tuition and fees to NC State, and become a student at an overseas partner, university.

You do not pay tuition to the university abroad, but you may have to, pay housing or other living costs to the university directly. Exchange programs, may be competitive based on their popularity.

Direct enroll programs are, very similar to exchange programs. The biggest difference is that you pay, tuition and fees to the school abroad, rather than NC State.

Out-of-state, students may want to consider direct enroll, as tuition for these programs is, sometimes lower than NC State's out-of-state tuition. On both exchange, and direct enroll programs, you may be the only NC State student or one of many, but you will have to support the international office, and will be with, other exchange or direct enroll students from the US and around the world.

Not every University that offers an exchange option will also offer a direct enroll, option and vice versa.

The Study Abroad Office also offers semester-long group, study abroad programs.

Some of these programs offer a wide core selection, while others have special themes and projects. You will earn transfer credit, on exchange and direct enroll programs.

Transfer credit earned will not factor, into your GPA, but undergraduate students must receive the equivalent of a C-, or better to receive credit.

As part of your application, you will work with your, academic department to have your courses approved, so you know the courses you, take abroad will fulfill degree requirements.

Your application will, provide further information on completing the course pre-approval process.
